Social Sciences? – Not Science at All

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron…

1 Tim 4:1-2 (NASB)

The Christian of this day must be ever watchful as to where they get their information, and this includes where and who they seek for marrital counseling.  The Scriptures warn that the spirit of Antichrist is ever present, and nowhere else is it more prevalent or better hidden than in the mental health field, in my opinion.  The standard models and teachings of psychology are by their very nature anti-Christian, and they stem from ungodly humanistic philosophies of men who reject God and his truth and substitute their own twisted, unscientific personal opinions carefully presented as scientific facts.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  What is most troubling is how emotional Christians get in defending them and their false teachings of victimization.

I pride myself in being considered a scientist.  I have been in amateur astronomy for most of my life, and have written, published and given lectures.  One of my works was referred to in a NASA publication (Lunar Swirls, Magnetic Anomalies, and the Reiner Gamma Formation:  (http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2006/26jun_lunarswirls/)).  My point here is that I believe in the scientific method, and that science is the biggest asset to Christian Apologetics.  I also see a problem with the Mental Health field and claims that it is based upon science.  It is not.

John Babler, David Penley and Mike Bizzell make this point in their book Counseling by the Book. They make the point that the social sciences are not science:

First, we argue against the idea that the social sciences are truly scientific endeavors.  There are many within the scientific and social science community who have concurred that they are not true science.  True science can only concern itself with the physical side of man (McMahon, 4)…Karl Popper, who is regarded as one of the preeminent scholars in the area of philosophy of science, did a study of psychotherapy and concluded that its theories, though posing as science, had in fact more in common with primitive myths than with science.” He also stated that while they are interesting suggestions, they are “not in testable form (Popper, 33, 39). Paul Vitz, himself a professor of psychology, writes:

Psychologists in the therapy world today have recognized that their understanding of the human person has not become more scientific.  Furthermore, they no longer believe that to label their discipline as science is either possible in practice or desirable in theoryThe result is that psychotherapy has begun to return to its roots in the pre-modern era, when psychology was understood to be a sub-discipline of philosophy (Vitz, First things, 18).

Vitz also states that “contemporary psychology is a form of secular humanism based on the rejection of god and the worship of self. (Vitz, Psychology as religion, xii).

They (Babler, Penley, and Bizzell) go on, “Second, even if we bought into the idea that social sciences truly are sciences, this would not make the ideas they put forth absolute truth.  Only Scripture can claim to have absolute truth, for only it comes straight to us from God Hinself.”

Third, we would argue that social sciences are not sciences, but are rather philosophies masquerading as sciences.”

So, if social sciences are not science, but rather just a pseudo-science masquerading as science, why are so many Christians chucking their bibles aside and seeking the failed philosophies of ungodly men for their marital and psychological help (and more troubling is why are so many churches offering these Anti-Christ teachings as helps to the married couples seeking counseling or individuals suffering from issues such as depression)? Could it be that this pseudo-science offers them an out; they are sick, and its not their fault?

Talk about timing:

Right after I wrote this, I overheard a high school student state to a friend that she cannot control herself in her conduct toward classmates and friends “Because I am bi-polar and it is genetic!“  See the problem with being Psychologized?  It’s not my fault. My sinful conduct is a genetic disease and I have no control over it!

True Biblical Counseling is hard work…and takes a great deal of time.  Most churches seem much more interested in increasing their numbers than in actually taking the time to disciple anyone!  Integrating psychology and Biblical principles is false teaching.  As these authors point out from scripture:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Col 2:8 (NASB)
